It may look like Eureka Springs reveals herself all at once as you drive down the hill. But this is the secret behind the traveler’s curiosity. This is not a place you can checklist your way through in a weekend.

That’s because there are staircases that disappear between buildings. Yes, there is something to see there. Ghostly old signs painted on buildings are leftovers from another century. And yes, there really was a mortuary right here, but what is there now? Springs are tucked unexpectedly into rock faces, and lush pocket gardens invite you to pause and reflect. The sidewalks are steep enough and rough enough to keep you going slow.

Every stop in Eureka has a long-ago past, a present, and a future. In the past, it may have been the town’s first movie theater, a paint store, or Prohibition-era gambling ––things we discover on our Haunted Pub Crawl. It might have been a bakery, a college, or a livery stable. In the present it might be a kitchen shop and next time you visit it’s a boogie clothing store. It’s not that we’re fickle; it’s that Eureka Springs is constantly evolving.

Curiosity can change the way you experience Eureka Springs. It encourages you to look at least twice. It begs your wonder to lead you around that corner or down that stair. It an invitation to ask about the details, like the tin ceiling, the rock walls, the underground room, or that fairy shrine almost hidden outside from view.

Eureka Springs is not a straight line, not a square, not a miracle mile

Built between steep mountaintops, Eureka Springs is a jumble of multi-story buildings that seem to defy gravity. Streets rarely meet at 90-degree angles but come together in an alphabet soup––something we share on our First Timer’s Guide. Street names may change every time they wiggle around a curve. What’s happening at the top of the hill is probably totally different at the bottom of the hill, even if it’s the same building. And the way you get to either may be a fortuitous surprise.

The historic loop is roughly 5 miles long . Within that area, there are some 56 miles of stone walls, which make perfect hiding places for treasures, like tucked-away Arkansas crystals, painted rocks, art and mosaics left my locals for you to discover. Look up, look down. If you aren’t curious, you may miss it all.

The best discoveries don’t have to be famous

Visitors naturally arrive with a few well-known places on their lists. Those landmarks deserve attention, but fame is not the only measure of a memorable discovery. Take time for that small spring, an unusual door, a hidden stairway, or a question you want to ask a shopkeeper. They may not know all the answers, but they will love your engagement. There’s one answer you’ll always hear… Yes, our streets are always this crooked. And no, there’s no level way to get here.

Spontaneity works best when you are comfortable. The historic sidewalks are uneven and the hills are steep. Wear shoes with good tread, bring water, and carry a charged phone.
